Kimberly Karpanty creates and teaches nationally and internationally as an invited guest artist and as a chorographer and performer with Travesty Dance Group, of which she is a co-founder and Artistic Director. Karpanty choreographed, taught and performed professionally in New York City for over ten years, touring with Rondo American Dance Theatre and as a soloist with Linda Nutter & Dancers. She was a founding member of the collaborative, multilingual, interdisciplinary dance & theatre group StraightJacket/Danza en vano, a recipient of the U.S./Mexico Fund for Culture Grant. Karpanty has appeared in works by Manuel Alum, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Cliff Keuter, Murray Louis, David Matiano, Joan Meggitt, Linda Nutter, Tommy Parlon, Kora Radella, Jennifer Tsukayama and Doug Varone, among others.
Karpanty has made over 60 original works in modern dance, dance theatre, screen dance and concert jazz dance genres. Her work is interdisciplinary in collaboration with composers, poets, musicians, new media artists and scenic and lighting designers, and has been produced throughout the United States and abroad.
Karpanty is a Professor of Dance at Kent State University where she teaches modern dance and Simonson-based jazz dance techniques, improvisation, advanced composition, dance science, dance & technology, pedagogy and American jazz dance history. She is a six-time recipient of the KSU Faculty Excellence Award and directed the pre-professional Kent Dance Ensemble from 1996-2017. Karpanty holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Choreography and Dance Technology from Arizona State University and a Master of Arts in Dance and Dance Education from New York University. She is a fully certified teacher of the Simonson Technique and is a Pilates Method Alliance Certified Pilates Teacher (PMA®-CPT).
