Documentary on Lynn Simonson

One cannot accurately capture through words the love Lynn Simonson has for jazz dance and teaching, nor the joy it is to be in her presence. So, as a follow-up to the chapter I authored in Jazz Dance: A History of the Roots and Branches, I have begun a documentary film on her life, her work, and those who carry on her legacy.  Filming began in Barcelona in July 2016, and continued in New York City in July 2018.  Additional filming commences in early 2019 in NYC and Palm Springs, CA.

“umbra,” a dance film

"umbra"  is a new dance film by Kim Karpanty and Joan Meggitt, currently in post production.  The umbra (Latin for "shadow") is the innermost and darkest part of a shadow, where the light source is completely blocked by the occluding body. To be in a shadow is to be protected. The film explores metaphors surrounding protection and preservation.

Monsoon (Monzón),” a solo

“Monsoon (Monzón)” is envisioned as a 30-minute multidisciplinary, improvisational solo work, choreographed and performed by TDG co-founder and Artistic Director Kim Karpanty. The work will be created in collaboration with Argentinian photographer/video artist Tristán Pérez-Martín, Swedish contemporary performance artist Benedikte Esperi, and a yet-to-be named composer/musician during a residency in Barcelona Spain.

Karpanty will combine visual, kinetic and theatrical elements into a study of contrasts in her recent experiences as the victim of bullying, gender bias and ageism, paralleled by the strength and impact of the unpredictable storm, the Monsoon.

Words found in the definition of “Monsoon” from several sources will fuel the invention of the movement vocabulary, such as: Surge, Whirl, Squall, Wave, Stream, Outflow, Reverse, Expand, Blow and Uplift. The performance will incorporate storytelling, poetry, music, video and both choreographed and improvised contemporary dance, and will visit moments of sadness (“Write me a love letter”) and humor (“I used to be funny” and “Nobody wears pants anymore”) in several modular sections.
